Abderrahmane Sissako

Born in 1961 in Maurinania, Abderrahmane Sissako grew up in Mali before studying film at VGIK (National Institute of Cinema of Moscow). His graduation film, The Game (1989), is screened at the International Critics' Week in 1991. In 1993, he directs the medium-length film October, screened at the Festival de Cannes in the selection Un Certain Regard. It is with Life on Earth, selected by the Directors' Fortnight in 1998 and Waiting for Happiness, selected by Un Certain Regard in 2002 and awarded the International Critics' Prize, that he truly distinguishes himself as one of the most important filmmakers of his continent. Bamako was selected by Cannes, Out of Competition, in 2006.
